In the navigation zone of the provinces of East and West Flanders, Flemish and French-speaking Brabant and Hainaut in Belgium and the Nord Pas-de-Calais region in France, over 1,600 km of waterways are accessible to pleasure navigation.

This close and cross-border navigation network Is linked up with the North Sea (via the coastal ports) and with the inland waterways of central France, Germany and the Netherlands.

The range of waterways varies from small narrow picturesque canals and meandering rivers over modern commercial waterways to tidal rivers and ship-canals. However, quite a lot of smaller canals are exclusively used by pleasure craft. In this area pleasure craft will be crossing a variety of ever-changing scenery and will come straight into the heart of some major cultural cities like Brugge (Bruges), Gent (Ghent), Kortrijk (Courtrai), Antwerp, Brussel (Brussels), Tournai and Lille. At al] times the draught and headroom are sufficient for the average motor yacht. Bridges and looks are operated for pleasure craft, during the tourist navigation season even on Sundays and public holidays. Over 90 marinas comprising more than 8,000 berths are equipped with all modern conveniences. Apart from that, a wide range of free moorings are available as well. In this navigation zone lovers of nautical and maritime heritage will find a unique collection of historic looks, different types of bridges, navigation tunnels and boat lifts, a number of which were even nominated UNESCO world heritage.
Kortrijk "de Leiebocht": Peddelen naar de Broeltorens

The practically unlimited cycling and walking facilities In this area will add a sporting touch to your boating holiday.

The river Leie rises at Lisbourg (Artesia, Northern France) and Is 186 kilometers long, half of which on Belgian territory. The river flows into the Schelde/Escaut (Scheldt) in Ghent. Ever since the early Middle Ages the Leie has been used as a navigation route. Kortrijk (Courtrai) and Gent (Ghent) developed along the shores of the river to become major commercial centers. From the 17th century the Leie flooded regularly, which caused consecutive stages of canalization: straightening up the bends, Increasing its capacity, reinforcing the banks and building looks. The water works at Kortrijk (Courtrai) (1997-2004) are putting the finishing touches to the modernization works whereby the cross-border Leie Is being standardized to European tonnage (1,350 tonnes). Due to its importance for the flax industry (the water was ideal to ret flax), the Leie was nicknamed 'Golden River. Between Deinze and Ghent the Leie has retained Its original character. Its green edges attract nature lovers, tourists and artists alike.
